Watch how local farmers cultivate and harvest coffee in the Eastern Ghats in this documentary by THE 461 CULTURE:

The History of Coffee in Araku (1898 to Today)

Coffee cultivation in the Eastern Ghats began around 1898, when a British administrator named Broome planted the first coffee bushes along the Ananthagiri hills. While it started as a modest experiment, the high altitude, red loamy soil, and balanced monsoon moisture created ideal micro-climate conditions.

After Indian independence, the state's Girijan Cooperative Corporation (GCC) and later pioneering initiatives by the Naandi Foundation organized tens of thousands of tribal adivasi farmers into a global regenerative agriculture cooperative. Today, Araku Coffee has its own flagship luxury boutique store in Paris and boasts international organic certification.

What Makes Araku Coffee Taste So Distinctive?

Regenerative Shade Cultivation

  • Two-Tier Canopy Shade: Unlike sun-grown plantation mono-crops, Araku coffee bushes grow beneath towering silver oak, mango, and jackfruit trees. This slows down berry maturation, intensifying natural sugars and complex aromatic oils.
  • Intercropped with Black Pepper: Pepper vines coil around the shade trees right beside coffee plants, imparting subtle spicy undertones to the soil.
  • Zero Chemical Pesticides: Local adivasi communities use traditional composts, cattle manure, and bio-fertilizers.
  • Selective Hand-Picking: Only deep crimson ripe berries are harvested by hand, ensuring superior cup clarity without bitter unripe beans.

Best Months to Visit the Plantations

  • Blossom Season (April to May): Following early summer pre-monsoon showers, the entire valley blooms with delicate white jasmine-like coffee flowers. The air carries an intoxicating floral fragrance.
  • Harvest Season (November to February): The hills turn crimson as berries ripen. This is the best time for photography, watching pulp processing, and enjoying crisp winter weather.
