Video Exploration: THE 461 CULTURE

The breathtaking visuals and raw beauty of this location were documented by creator channel THE 461 CULTURE. Watch their visual journey below to preview the terrain, forest trail, and roar of the cascades before you go:

What Makes Thonkota Waterfalls Special

Unlike Katiki or Chaparai, which have paved approach roads and commercial snack counters, Thonkota remains completely untouched by commercial tourism.

  • Multi-tiered Cascades: The water drops over multiple natural granite ledges before splashing into a wide, clear natural pool.
  • Pristine Tribal Serenity: Surrounded by wild bamboo groves, sal trees, and fern foliage, the only sounds you hear are bird songs and rushing water.
  • Clear Mountain Stream: The water originates from unpolluted highland forest aquifers, making it noticeably clean and cool.

How to Reach: Route & Travel Directions

There are two primary routes to reach Thonkota depending on your starting point:

Route A • From Araku Valley (~52 km)

Araku → Pedabayalu → Thonkota

Head south-west from Araku town towards Pedabayalu mandal. The route winds through quiet village roads, pepper plantations, and mountain passes. As you approach the remote hamlets of Pinakota / Bandavalasa, ask friendly locals for the trailhead to Tonkota / Pedabayalu falls.

Route B • From Visakhapatnam (~95 km)

Vizag → Devarapalle → Pinakota → Thonkota

If driving directly from Vizag without touching Araku first, you can travel via Devarapalle, taking the scenic interior ghat ascent that climbs towards the Pedabayalu agency highlands.

Vehicle Recommendation

The main road is asphalted, but the final 3–4 km stretch leading up to the village parking point includes narrow, uneven dirt patches. An SUV or high-ground-clearance vehicle (or a rugged motorcycle) is strongly recommended over low-clearance sedans.

The Forest Trek & Trail Experience

Once you park your vehicle at the edge of the hamlet, motorable access ends. From here, you embark on a 15 to 25 minute downhill hike through the forest.

  1. Stream Crossing: Early on the trail, you will cross a gentle shallow mountain rivulet over rounded stones.
  2. Forest Descent: The path descends down a shaded slope with loose soil and tree roots. Good trekking shoes with reliable traction are essential.
  3. Arrival at the Falls: As you near the bottom of the gorge, the roar of the waterfall intensifies, welcoming you to the magnificent multi-tiered cascade and swimming pool.

Crucial Tips for Responsible Explorers

Essential Checklist

  • No Mobile Signal: Network connectivity drops off completely in the gorge. Download offline Google Maps for the entire Alluri Sitharama Raju region before departure.
  • No Food Stalls: There are zero commercial shops near the falls. Carry your own drinking water, electrolytes, and light snacks.
  • Leave No Trace: This is a sacred, clean natural habitat for local indigenous tribes. Do not leave plastic bottles, wrappers, or trash behind. Always carry your trash back to the city.
  • Current Caution: Do not attempt to swim close to the plunging base during heavy monsoon downpours, as underwater currents can be powerful.
  • Best Time to Visit: October to February provides ideal weather, pleasant temperatures, and clear water flow.
