Route Snapshot & Driving Distance

The most popular and well-maintained route connects Visakhapatnam to Araku Valley via the NH-516 Ananthagiri Ghat Road. The road surface is asphalted, broad enough for two lanes, and clearly marked with reflector studs on hairpin edges.

Follow: Vizag City → Pendurthi → Sabbavaram → Bowdara → Ananthagiri Hills → Borra Caves → Araku Town.

Total Distance 115 km
Driving Time 3 – 3.5 hrs
Hairpins 27+ Bends
Elevation ~910 m

Stage 1: Vizag to Sabbavaram & Bowdara (0 – 60 km)

The first 50 to 60 kilometres from Visakhapatnam are largely flat agricultural plains. Departing the city through Pendurthi or Sabbavaram, you'll encounter smooth stretches with pleasant roadside tree cover. This section generally takes 1 to 1.5 hours depending on morning commuter traffic.

KM 25 • Sabbavaram Junction

Recommended Breakfast Pit-Stop

If you start early (around 6:00 AM), Sabbavaram is the ideal spot to break for piping-hot Andhra tiffins — steamed idlis, crispy medu vadas, pesarattu, and filter coffee. Local tiffin outlets here are quick, clean, and very economical.

Stage 2: The Ananthagiri Ghat Ascent (60 – 95 km)

Once you cross Bowdara check-post, the plains surrender to rolling green foothills. Here begins the celebrated Ananthagiri Ghat road. Over the next 35 kilometres, the road carves its way through dense reserve forest with more than 27 hairpin curves.

As you climb past 500 metres elevation, the ambient temperature drops noticeably. The sticky coastal air gives way to refreshing mountain breezes carrying the subtle scent of wild eucalyptus, silver oak trees, and coffee blossoms.

KM 72 • Ananthagiri Coffee Overlook

Ananthagiri Village & Coffee Estates

The hillside village of Ananthagiri is surrounded by organic coffee estates cultivated by local tribal farmers. You can pull over at designated shoulders to stretch your legs, sip freshly brewed Araku filter coffee from local stalls, and snap pictures of the mist drifting through tree canopies.

KM 82 • Galikonda Peak

Galikonda (Windy Peak) Viewpoint

Standing at an altitude of over 1,000 metres above sea level, Galikonda is the highest point on the ghat road. On clear mornings you can see multiple ridges of the Eastern Ghats folding into the horizon. Strong, refreshing winds blow continuously here.

Stage 3: Borra Caves to Araku Town (95 – 115 km)

After descending slightly from Galikonda, the ghat road levels out into a broad, picturesque valley floor lined with tall sal trees and bamboo groves. At the 92 km milestone, a short 4 km detour leads directly to India's most celebrated subterranean wonder: Borra Caves.

Borra Caves Quick Facts

  • Entry Timings: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Lunch break: 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM)
  • Entry Fee: ₹60 for adults, ₹45 for children; camera permit extra
  • Time Needed: 45 to 60 minutes to descend and explore the illuminated walkways
  • Tip: Wear footwear with good grip as the limestone stairs can get damp

From Borra Caves, the final 23 kilometres to Araku Valley town is a calm, leisurely drive through tribal villages, yellow mustard flowers (in winter), and lush paddy fields.

Essential Ghat Road Safety Tips

Driver Advisory

Maintain 2nd or 3rd gear while descending the ghat road to allow engine braking. Riding your brakes continuously can cause brake fade. Honk gently at blind hairpin curves and never overtake on bends.

  • Fuel Up in Vizag: There are no dependable petrol pumps along the 40 km mountain stretch between Bowdara and Borra Caves. Always begin with a minimum of half a tank of fuel.
  • Ideal Departure Time: Start from Visakhapatnam between 5:30 AM and 6:30 AM to reach the ghat road before heavy commercial bus traffic begins.
  • Mobile Connectivity: While Jio and Airtel have 4G/5G in Vizag and Araku town, signals drop significantly on the ghat road. Pre-download Google Maps offline for the Visakhapatnam-Araku region.

Alternative Route: The Kirandul Passenger Train

If you prefer not to drive, the Visakhapatnam–Kirandul Passenger Train (08551 / 08552) offers one of India’s most scenic railway journeys. Departing Vizag Railway Station at 6:45 AM, the train traverses 58 mountain tunnels and 84 bridges over the Eastern Ghats before arriving at Araku Station around 11:00 AM.

"The train journey is sheer poetry for train buffs, while the road trip provides ultimate freedom to stop at roadside waterfalls, coffee plantations, and viewpoints at your own pace." — Araku Trails Travel Notes
